Billings Map Poster & Print
Billings is the largest city in Montana, spread across the valley of the Yellowstone River. The city grew from a railroad town founded in 1882 by the Northern Pacific and named after the railroad's president, Frederick Billings. Its downtown grid is set at an angle, following the railway line, while newer neighbourhoods spread out in straight north-south blocks.
North of downtown, the Rimrocks, a line of sandstone cliffs, rise above the valley and form a strong edge to the city. The Yellowstone River runs along the south and east, with cottonwood trees along its banks. Beyond the rims and river, open plains and ranch land extend in every direction.
A Billings map poster shows the city between two natural boundaries: the curve of the river and the steep line of the Rimrocks. The rotated downtown grid sits inside a larger, regular pattern of streets, and the airport sits on top of the rims. The result is a clear, strong composition with a western feel.

Yellowstone River
The river curves along the southern side of the city, its channels and islands forming a flowing line beside the grid.
Angled downtown
The original railroad grid runs parallel to the tracks at an angle, set clearly apart from the north-south blocks of later neighbourhoods.

Billings works for ranch families, Montana State University Billings graduates and anyone who has driven through on the way to Yellowstone. The rims and river give it a shape that people recognise at once.
You can write your own title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps Magic City or a year you moved there. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand; Sand suits the sandstone cliffs.
