Breckenridge lies on the upper Blue River in central Colorado, and its map begins with a simple grid. Main Street runs north to south beside the river, with short blocks of historic buildings on either side. Around this core, newer roads curl into the forested slopes, and to the west the Tenmile Range rises steeply, its lower flanks laced with the ski runs of Peaks 6 to 10.
The town was founded in 1859 during the Colorado gold rush, and dredge boats later churned the river valley for gold, leaving long rock piles that still mark the land north of town. Much of downtown is a national historic district, with Victorian houses and storefronts from the mining era. The ski area opened in 1961.
A Breckenridge map poster keeps the town's two sides in view: the regular blocks of the old grid by the river, and the winding lanes and open ground of the mountain beyond. Boreas Pass Road leaves the southeast side of town, adding a long switchbacked line that climbs toward the Continental Divide.

Blue River
The river runs north through town toward Dillon Reservoir, channelled along the edge of downtown and marking the line between the old grid and the slopes.
Peaks 6 to 10
The ski area spreads across a row of summits in the Tenmile Range, numbered rather than named, whose lower slopes reach right down to the western edge of town.
