Butembo is a city in North Kivu, in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, lying almost on the equator yet high enough to have a mild, cool climate. It has grown into one of the region's major commercial centres, with traders linking the surrounding farms and towns to markets in East Africa. The city spread rapidly, and much of its growth is recent.
From above, Butembo follows the shape of its hills. Streets run along ridges and down into valleys, and neighbourhoods fill the slopes wherever the ground allows. A main road passes through the city on the north-south route through the province, and around it a denser commercial centre gives way to looser residential areas and fields.
Around the city, the land is intensively farmed, and the Virunga and Rwenzori mountains lie within the wider region.
