Carcassonne is really two towns, and the map shows both clearly. On a hill on the right bank of the Aude stands La Cité, the fortified medieval city enclosed by a double ring of walls with dozens of towers. Its oval outline, with the tight lanes inside, is one of the most recognisable shapes in France.
Across the river lies the Bastide Saint-Louis, the lower town founded in the thirteenth century on a regular grid of streets around a central square. The Pont Vieux links the two banks, and the Canal du Midi passes along the northern side of the lower town, adding a second line of water to the plan.
La Cité was heavily restored in the nineteenth century by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, and the historic fortified city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Carcassonne map poster places the rounded walls and the straight streets of the bastide side by side, a contrast between defence and planning.

The lower town is laid out in a near-perfect grid of medieval streets around a central square, one of the clearest planned street patterns in southern France.
Aude and Canal du Midi
The river curves between the two towns, crossed by the Pont Vieux, while the Canal du Midi runs past the lower town as a smooth, man-made line.
