Carlsbad lies on the coast of north San Diego County. Its shape on a map is set by water. Three coastal lagoons, Buena Vista, Agua Hedionda and Batiquitos, cut inland from the Pacific and divide the city into clear sections. Interstate 5 and the coastal railway run north to south, parallel to the beach, and the older village sits in a small grid between them and the sea.
East of the freeway, the city is more suburban. Curving residential streets, cul-de-sacs, golf courses and business parks spread over the low hills around McClellan-Palomar Airport. Carlsbad is known for its springtime Flower Fields of ranunculus, for Legoland California and as a centre of the golf equipment industry. Its name comes from the Bohemian spa town of Karlsbad, after mineral water was found here.
