The Sacred Way

Chaïdári Map Poster & Print
Chaïdári lies on the western edge of the Athens basin, where the city's dense street grid rises onto the slopes of Mount Aigaleo and the Poikilo hills. On a map the houses thin out uphill and give way to pine forest, while the lower streets merge with the continuous urban fabric of Athens.
The main axis is Iera Odos, the Sacred Way, which in antiquity linked Athens with Eleusis. Its modern course still cuts through the district toward the pass at Daphni. Here, the Monastery of Daphni, known for its Byzantine mosaics, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site within the municipality.
A Chaïdári map poster shows that meeting of city and hillside: tight residential blocks, the large grounds of Attikon hospital and military facilities, and the green mass of the forest above. Metro Line 3 connects the area to central Athens, with stations along its southern edge.

Daphni Monastery
The Byzantine monastery near the pass is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, sitting among pine woods where the road leaves the Athens basin.
Aigaleo slopes
Streets climb onto the mountain and stop at the forest edge, leaving a large wooded area that contrasts with the dense blocks below.
