Chichigalpa lies on the flat, fertile plain of Chinandega in northwestern Nicaragua, between the Pacific coast and the chain of volcanoes that runs along the country's west. The town is built on a regular grid of square blocks, and from above it forms a neat rectangle of streets set within an almost unbroken expanse of cultivated land.
That land is mostly sugarcane. Chichigalpa is home to the Ingenio San Antonio, one of the oldest and largest sugar mills in Nicaragua, and to the distillery that produces Flor de Caña rum. To the north rises San Cristóbal, the highest volcano in Nicaragua, a presence felt in every view even if it sits beyond the edge of a town-scale map.
