Chŏngju is a city in North P'yŏngan Province in the northwest of North Korea, on the lowland plain between the mountains and the Yellow Sea coast. From above, the town appears as a compact grid of streets surrounded by paddy fields, irrigation channels and low hills.
Its position is defined by transport: the main railway line from Pyongyang to Sinŭiju on the Chinese border passes through Chŏngju, and roads follow the same corridor.
