Cornell sits on East Hill above the city of Ithaca, and the map makes its geography unusually clear. Two gorges, Fall Creek to the north and Cascadilla to the south, frame the central campus. Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White founded the university in 1865 as a place where any person could find instruction in any study. Its core is the Arts Quad, a broad open rectangle. The grassy Libe Slope descends from the library and McGraw Tower toward West Campus, and farms, research fields and botanic gardens spread out to the east.

The Arts Quad

This long grassy hill runs west from the library and clock tower down toward West Campus. From the top it gives the view over Ithaca and Cayuga Lake that alumni remember.
