Curionópolis is a municipality in the south-east of Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon's mining region. The town grew along a highway, and from above its streets form a fairly regular grid on either side of the main road. Beyond the urban area, the map opens onto cleared pasture and remnants of forest, crossed by straight roads leading to neighbouring towns such as Parauapebas and Eldorado do Carajás.
The municipality includes Serra Pelada, the site of a famous gold rush in the early 1980s, when tens of thousands of prospectors dug a huge open pit by hand. The images of that mine became known around the world, and the town's history is closely tied to it.
