Daugavpils is the second-largest city in Latvia. It lies in the south-east of the country, on a wide bend of the Daugava River. On a map, the centre has an unusually regular grid of long, straight streets laid out in the nineteenth century. Around it are wooden suburbs, railway lines and several small lakes.
Its best-known landmark is Daugavpils Fortress, built by the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century. Its geometric ramparts are still clearly visible from above. The painter Mark Rothko was born in the city in 1903, and a Rothko art centre now occupies a former arsenal building inside the fortress.
A Daugavpils map poster combines three strong elements: the curve of the river, the orderly grid of the centre and the angular outline of the fortress. Few cities of this size have such clear geometry. On a black-and-white sheet it reads like a carefully drawn historic plan.

The fortress
The angular ramparts and bastions of Daugavpils Fortress form a clear geometric shape on the map, now home to the Mark Rothko art centre.
