The Des Plaines River runs through the city from north to south, lined with forest preserves. It forms a green, winding corridor that divides the street grid into two unequal halves.
The downtown clusters around the Metra station, where commuter rail lines and major roads converge in a tight knot. To the south, the city borders O'Hare International Airport, so the long straight runways and taxiways press right up against residential blocks. The rest of the plan is a classic Midwestern pattern of rectangular blocks, broken up by parks and industrial zones.
Des Plaines is where Ray Kroc opened his first McDonald's franchise in 1955, a milestone in the chain's history.
