Diamantina Map Poster & Print
Diamantina lies high in the Serra do Espinhaço in Minas Gerais, and its map is anything but regular. The historic centre follows the slopes. Narrow streets climb, bend and fork around churches and small squares, forming an irregular web that grew organically from the eighteenth century. Beyond the town, bare rocky ridges and quartzite outcrops fill the landscape.
The town grew rich from diamonds discovered in the region in the early 1700s. The Portuguese crown tightly controlled the mining district. The well-preserved colonial centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Diamantina is also the birthplace of Juscelino Kubitschek, the president who built Brasília, and is linked with the story of Chica da Silva.
A Diamantina map poster shows how a colonial mining town fitted itself to difficult terrain. The dense, winding core stands out clearly against the empty rock around it. It is a beautiful choice for anyone who has walked those stone streets or listened to the serenades that fill them on certain evenings.

Serra do Espinhaço
Rocky ridges surround the town on all sides. They leave the map's outer areas mostly open and give the centre stronger contrast.
Churches and squares
Colonial churches anchor small open spaces throughout the old town. They are points where several winding streets meet.
