Douentza Map Poster & Print
Douentza is in the Mopti region of central Mali, on the main road running east from the Niger valley toward Gao. On a map the town is a compact grid of sandy streets and walled compounds, with the highway running along it and tracks leading out across the plain. Outside the built area the land is open Sahel, dotted with seasonal ponds and scrub.
The landscape around Douentza is notable for its sandstone outcrops, which rise sharply from the plain and continue east toward Hombori. The town has long been a meeting point for farmers and herders, and its market has served the surrounding area. The wider Gourma region to the south-east is known for the desert elephants that migrate across it.
A Douentza map poster is sparse and striking: a dense core of compounds, the strong line of the main road and wide empty spaces beyond. In black and white the town looks like a small, orderly mark on a very large landscape. It is a respectful portrait of a Sahel town for the people who call it home.

Compound grid
Walled family compounds form tight blocks in the centre, giving the town a dense, finely divided texture from above.
Open Sahel plain
Around the town the land is open, broken only by tracks and seasonal water, which leaves wide calm spaces in the print.
