El Empalme Map Poster & Print
El Empalme lies in the north of Guayas Province, in the humid lowlands between the Andes and Ecuador's Pacific coast. Its name means the junction, and the town grew where roads linking the coast with the interior meet. From above, the built area stretches along these routes, with the densest streets gathered around the intersection.
The surrounding land is agricultural, planted with crops that suit the warm, wet climate of the coastal plain, and small rivers wind through the countryside. The streets are largely rectilinear. Blocks are laid out along the main roads and extend gradually outward as the town has grown.
An El Empalme map poster shows a place defined by movement: roads arriving from several directions, a grid gathering around them and countryside pressing close on every side. In clean linework, the crossroads that gave the town its name becomes the visual centre of the composition.

Linear growth
Buildings extend outward along the highways, so the town's outline is long, not round. The shape is common to settlements that grew along transport routes.
Lowland rivers
Small rivers and streams wind through the farmland around the town. Their soft curves contrast with the straight roads and rectangular blocks.
