Basilica and plaza
The central square and the basilica beside it form the heart of the grid, the point from which the town's streets were laid out and toward which pilgrims still travel.

El Viejo Map Poster & Print
El Viejo lies on the broad, fertile plain of northwestern Nicaragua, just west of the city of Chinandega. Its centre follows a clear colonial grid: square blocks around a central plaza, with straight streets running out in each direction. At the edges the grid loosens into newer neighbourhoods and then gives way to farmland that stretches across the lowlands toward the Pacific coast.
The town is best known for the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, home to the image of the Virgin known as La Purísima de El Viejo, a figure of national devotion in Nicaragua. Each December pilgrims arrive for the celebrations of La Gritería. The volcanic chain of the region, including San Cristóbal, rises on the horizon to the east.
An El Viejo map poster favours clarity. The regular grid of the colonial core gives the drawing an almost architectural calm, while the roads that leave town cut across the plain in long, straight lines. It is a simple, strong composition that reflects a town built on flat ground and organised, from the start, around its church.

Colonial grid
Straight streets meet at right angles across the centre in a pattern inherited from Spanish colonial planning, giving the map an even, orderly texture.
Roads across the plain
Beyond the town, long roads run over flat farmland toward Chinandega and the coast, sparse lines against open space that emphasise how level this landscape is.
