Farnham lies in the west of Surrey, close to the border with Hampshire, on the River Wey. The town centre sits on the gentle slope north of the river, and its main streets form a compact, easily recognisable pattern. Castle Street, wide and lined with Georgian buildings, runs uphill towards Farnham Castle, which overlooks the town.
The castle was founded in the twelfth century by the Bishops of Winchester and remained an episcopal residence for centuries. Behind it, Farnham Park forms a large open space that appears on the map as a wide green area next to the dense centre. The town is also home to the University for the Creative Arts and has a long tradition of crafts.
