Fiumicino occupies the low coast west of Rome where the Tiber reaches the Tyrrhenian Sea. The river splits here, and the artificial Fiumicino canal runs straight to the shore while the natural branch curves south, enclosing the flat land known as Isola Sacra. The town grew along the canal, with fishing boats moored on both banks.
North of the canal stretch the runways of Leonardo da Vinci airport, the largest in Italy, drawn on the map as broad pale bands. Beside them lies one of the most unusual shapes in the region: the hexagonal basin of Trajan's harbour, built in the second century as part of Portus, the port complex that supplied ancient Rome.
