Flensburg lies at the inner end of the Flensburg Firth, a long, narrow inlet of the Baltic that forms part of the border between Germany and Denmark. From above, the water reaches deep into the city, and the harbour splits the urban area into eastern and western halves climbing gentle slopes on either side.
The old town runs along the western shore in a long band of streets, courtyards and merchants' houses, a reminder of the city's history as a trading port once known for its rum. Flensburg is also home to Germany's federal motor transport authority, which keeps the national driving register, and to a well-known local brewery.
