Floirac lies on the right bank of the Garonne, facing central Bordeaux across the river. Its map has two distinct levels. Along the water, a flat plain holds newer districts, rail lines and large developments. To the east the land climbs steeply onto the coteaux, a line of wooded hills where the streets begin to wind and follow the slope.
The hills made the town a natural site for the Bordeaux Observatory, which was built on the heights of Floirac in the late nineteenth century. Down on the plain, the Arkéa Arena opened in 2018 and has become one of the region's main concert and sports venues. It is part of the wider redevelopment of Bordeaux's right bank.
