Focșani is the capital of Vrancea county in eastern Romania, on the plain where the Carpathian foothills give way to the lowlands of the Siret. From above, the city is compact and fairly regular, with main streets leading into a large central square, Piața Unirii, and residential districts spreading outward in blocks of flats and low houses with gardens.
The city holds a special place in Romanian history. The small Milcov river once marked the border between Wallachia and Moldavia, and Focșani lay on both sides of it. When the two principalities united in 1859, the town became a symbol of that union, and the name of its central square, Union Square, still recalls it.
West and north of the city rise the vineyards of Odobești and Panciu, part of one of Romania's largest wine regions, with the Vrancea mountains beyond. The Milcov
Near the southern side of the city, the small Milcov river follows the old border between Wallachia and Moldavia, a modest line with a large place in history.
Housing districts
Blocks of flats from the second half of the twentieth century form broad, regular patterns around the older centre, adding rhythm to the outer parts of the sheet.
