The medieval core forms a compact, rounded shape outlined by the line of the old walls. Inside, the streets are dense and irregular.

Foligno Map Poster & Print
Foligno lies on the broad, level floor of the Valle Umbra, with the Apennine foothills rising to the east. Its historic centre forms a rough oval, once enclosed by walls and now marked by a ring of streets. The Topino river runs along the edge of the old town, and beyond it the newer districts spread out over the plain in a more open pattern.
Unlike most Umbrian towns, which sit on hilltops, Foligno is almost entirely flat, and it has long been a crossroads for roads and railways across central Italy. In 1472 the first printed edition of Dante's Divine Comedy was produced here. Locals also like the old saying that the town is the centre of the world.
A Foligno map poster shows that centred shape clearly. The compact oval of the old town, the curve of the river and the roads and rail lines radiating across the valley all fit together into one balanced composition. It reads almost like a diagram of a classic Italian town.

Topino river
The river curves along the side of the old town. It separates the historic centre from later districts and adds a gentle flowing line.
Valley crossroads
Roads and railways cross the level Valle Umbra in several directions. They show why the town grew into a transport hub for central Italy.
