Fredericksburg sits on the south bank of the Rappahannock River, where the river leaves the rolling Piedmont for the coastal plain. On the map, the old town is a neat colonial grid of streets parallel to the water, crossed by bridges to the north bank. Beyond it, suburban neighbourhoods spread west toward the Interstate corridor.
Founded in the eighteenth century as a river port, Fredericksburg is closely linked to early American history, including the childhood of George Washington nearby. In December 1862 it was the site of a major Civil War battle, and parts of that battlefield are preserved within the city's landscape. The University of Mary Washington campus sits on a hill west of the historic district.
