Fudong lies in the mountainous southwest of Yunnan province, in a region of deep valleys and forested ridges. On the map, the settlement sits where the land briefly levels out. Streets and buildings cluster along a valley floor, and roads leave in tight curves as they climb the surrounding slopes.
In this part of Yunnan, there is little flat land, and the terrain shapes every line.
