Kasbah and medina
The historic core is a compact maze of narrow lanes around the kasbah. Its irregular pattern stands in contrast to the regular modern streets around it.

Gafsa Map Poster & Print
Gafsa is one of the oldest cities in Tunisia. In antiquity it was Capsa, and archaeologists named the prehistoric Capsian culture after it. On a map, the old centre is a knot of narrow, irregular lanes around the kasbah, very different from the straighter streets of the modern districts around it.
The palm oasis lies beside the town, and irrigated gardens create a dense texture of small plots and paths. In the centre are the Roman pools, spring-fed basins that have been used since ancient times. Beyond them, the land opens out into dry plains and bare hills.
Gafsa is also the capital of Tunisia's phosphate mining region, and rail lines and roads connect it to the mining towns to the west. A Gafsa map poster brings together the old lanes, the oasis gardens and the routes into the desert, three layers of history in one frame.

The Roman pools
Spring-fed basins from the Roman period are still in the city centre. They are a small but meaningful feature of a place that has been inhabited for thousands of years.
Palm oasis
Irrigated gardens beside the city form a fine mosaic of plots, channels and paths. It is the greenest texture on the map.
