Gālīkesh lies in the east of Golestan province in northern Iran, where the lowland plain gives way to the wooded foothills of the eastern Alborz. The town is shaped by that transition. On a map, farmland and straight roads cover the flatter ground, while the lines become more irregular where the terrain rises and valleys lead up into the forest.
The main regional road toward Mashhad passes close by and continues east through Golestan National Park, the oldest national park in Iran. The park is known for its forests and wildlife, and its dense, largely roadless expanse appears on the map as broad open space beyond the town. It contrasts with the cultivated land to the west.
