Gjakovë lies in western Kosovo, on the Dukagjin plain, with mountains along the Albanian border rising to the west. The Krena River flows through the town, and the larger Erenik runs close by. From above, the old centre shows an irregular pattern of streets around the bazaar, while newer districts spread across flatter land with wider roads and larger blocks.
The town's best-known feature is its Grand Bazaar, the Çarshia e Madhe, one of the largest historic bazaars in the region, lined with low shops with wooden fronts. It was badly damaged during the 1999 war and later restored. The sixteenth-century Hadum Mosque stands nearby, and outside the town the long stone Terzijski Bridge crosses the Erenik.

Krena River
The small river flows through the town and is crossed by several bridges. It gives the map a natural line that both separates and connects different parts of the centre.
Erenik valley
