Gros Islet sits at the northern end of Saint Lucia, the Caribbean island in the Windward chain. On a map the coastline dominates: the wide, sheltered curve of Rodney Bay, the inner lagoon dredged into a marina, and the headland of Pigeon Island joined to the mainland by a causeway built in the 1970s. The old fishing village of Gros Islet lies at the north end of the bay.
Pigeon Island is a national landmark, with the ruins of British military fortifications on its hills, from which fleets once watched the French on Martinique.
