It is closely tied to the Bavarian capital by road and by the S-Bahn, and on a map its streets merge almost seamlessly with the outer districts of Munich to the west, while open land opens up to the east.
For more than a century Haar has been home to a large psychiatric hospital, founded in the early twentieth century and now part of the Isar-Amper-Klinikum. Its extensive grounds form a distinct campus of pavilions, paths and trees, and part of the former hospital site has been redeveloped as a new residential quarter.
