Haridwar has one of the most distinctive shapes in northern India. The city stretches along the Ganges exactly where the river emerges from the Shivalik hills onto the plains. On a map it is a narrow, elongated settlement pressed between wooded ridges and a braided river. Parallel channels, islands and embankments run through its centre.
The river defines everything here. At Har Ki Pauri, the most famous ghat, pilgrims gather each evening for the Ganga aarti, and Haridwar is one of the four sites of the Kumbh Mela. The city is also the headworks of the Upper Ganges Canal, a nineteenth-century engineering project whose straight course is easy to pick out against the river's natural curves.
