Hejing is the seat of Hejing County in the Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang. The town lies on the northern side of the Yanqi basin, where the Kaidu River leaves the Tian Shan and flows across the plain toward Bosten Lake, one of China's largest inland freshwater lakes.
From above, the town is a fairly regular grid of wide streets and large blocks, typical of planned county towns across the region, surrounded by irrigated farmland that forms an oasis in an otherwise arid landscape. The county stretches far into the mountains and includes the Bayanbulak grassland, known for its winding river and swans.

The Kaidu flows past the town on its way to Bosten Lake. Its wide, braided course forms a natural counterpoint to the straight streets.
