Illingen lies in the Neunkirchen district of Saarland. It is less a single town than a group of villages spread over rolling, partly wooded hills. On a map, several built-up areas with their own small centres are connected by winding country roads, with woodland and meadows in between. The small river Ill, a tributary of the Saar, gives the municipality its name and its main valley.
The best-known landmark is Burg Kerpen, a castle in the centre of Illingen that is used today for cultural events. Around it, the older streets follow the terrain, bending with the slopes instead of running in straight lines. Newer residential areas on the hillsides have the curved cul-de-sacs typical of postwar German housing.
