Indianola is the seat of Warren County, south of Des Moines, and its map is a clear example of a Midwestern courthouse town. Streets form a tidy north–south grid aligned with the survey lines of the surrounding farmland, and at the centre the courthouse square breaks the pattern with a single open block.
Simpson College, a private liberal arts college founded in the nineteenth century, occupies a large campus near downtown, with its quads and larger buildings clearly visible among the residential blocks. Each summer the town hosts the National Balloon Classic, and the balloons launch from a field on its edge.
