Istaravshan lies in northern Tajikistan, on the slopes where the Turkestan Range descends toward the Fergana Valley and the plains around it. It is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia; in 2002 it officially marked its 2,500th anniversary. Until 2000 it was known as Ura-Tyube.
The oldest part of the city grew around Mug Tepe, a hill topped by the remains of an ancient fortress. From above, the historic districts form a dense maze of narrow lanes and courtyard houses organised into traditional neighbourhoods, while newer streets run straighter across the lower ground. Istaravshan is also known for its craft traditions, particularly knife-making.

Traditional neighbourhoods form a dense network of narrow, irregular streets and courtyards, a pattern that contrasts clearly with the broader roads of newer districts.
Mountain foothills
