Johnston lies on the north-west side of Des Moines, Iowa, on the high ground above the Des Moines River. From above, it is a typical modern suburb, with curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs, commercial strips along the main roads, and plenty of green space. To the north, the river valley widens into Saylorville Lake, a long reservoir that forms a natural edge.
The town is home to Camp Dodge, headquarters of the Iowa National Guard, which occupies a large area on its northern side. Johnston is also known as the long-time home of Pioneer Hi-Bred, the seed company now part of Corteva, whose campus is one of the area's main employers.
