Kadayanallur is a town in the south of Tamil Nadu, in the Tenkasi area, on the plain east of the Western Ghats. From above, the town appears as a dense cluster of narrow streets and closely built houses, set in a patchwork of fields. The mountains rise to the west, and streams and irrigation channels come down toward the plain.
The streets are tight and irregular in the older parts, grown over time rather than planned, with lanes turning and meeting at odd angles. Around the town, irrigation tanks, the traditional reservoirs of South India, appear as rounded pools among paddy fields and coconut groves. Roads lead out to neighbouring towns across the plain.
