Kanakapura lies south-west of Bengaluru in Karnataka, in rocky, rolling country along the Arkavathi River. From above, the town grows along its main road, the route that continues south towards the Kaveri. It has a dense centre of shops and lanes, with newer layouts spreading outward in more regular blocks. Outside the town, granite outcrops, tanks and farmland shape the pattern.
The area is known for its granite, and quarries and bare rock appear clearly in the landscape around town. The Arkavathi winds nearby on its way to meet the Kaveri at Sangama. That confluence, and the Mekedatu gorge beyond it, draw visitors from the city. Coconut and mulberry plantations add to the agricultural mix.
