Kanhangad is in Kasaragod district, in the far north of Kerala. On the map, the coastline runs along the western edge in a long, gentle line. The town sits a little inland, along the main north–south highway and the railway. Rivers and backwaters reach the coast nearby, and the landscape between the sea and the hills is a patchwork of water, palms and paddy land. A short distance to the south, Bekal Fort stands on a headland above the sea. It is one of the largest forts in Kerala and one of the best-known sights in the district.
