Kırıkkale lies on the open plateau of Central Anatolia, a short drive east of Ankara. The Kızılırmak, Turkey's longest river, flows nearby. The landscape is dry, broad and gently rolling. The town spreads across it along railway lines and main roads, with no coastline or dense old quarter shaping it.
Its growth has an unusual origin. In the early years of the Republic, the state chose the site for arms and munitions factories, and those works became the core of the town. Housing, schools and commercial streets grew around them. Later came an oil refinery, and in 1989 the town became the centre of its own province.
A Kırıkkale map poster reflects that history. Large industrial plots sit next to regular residential blocks, rail lines cut across the town, and the roads run out onto the steppe. It is a practical, twentieth-century plan, and the map shows it clearly.

Railway lines
Rail tracks cross the town and link it to Ankara and eastern Anatolia. On the poster they are long, clean lines that cut through the street grid.
Open plateau
Beyond the built-up area there is very little dense street pattern. This leaves wide empty space around the town, typical of the Anatolian interior.
