Two samurai plateaus
The northern and southern samurai districts sit on facing heights. Their quiet residential lanes show up as two parallel clusters on either side of the valley.

Kitsuki Map Poster & Print
Kitsuki is a small city in Oita Prefecture on the southern side of the Kunisaki Peninsula in Kyushu. Its historic centre is one of the best-preserved Edo-period castle towns in Japan. Samurai residences were built on two parallel plateaus, and merchants lived in the low street between them. This arrangement is often called a sandwich-shaped castle town.
The layout still shows clearly on a map. Two raised districts run side by side with a narrow commercial strip below them, and short stone-paved slopes climb from the merchant quarter up to each plateau. The best known is Suya-no-saka. To the east, the reconstructed Kitsuki Castle stands on a promontory above the mouth of the river where it meets the sea. Rice fields and newer streets then spread across the flatter land.
A Kitsuki map poster turns this rare urban plan into a clean graphic. The two hills, the hollow between them and the water beside the castle come through well in black and white. Visitors who have walked the slopes in summer heat, and people interested in historic Japanese town planning, both tend to appreciate it.

Stepped slopes
Short, steep slopes such as Suya-no-saka and Shioya-no-saka connect the merchant street to the upper districts, forming small diagonal links across the old town.
Castle by the water
Kitsuki Castle stands on a height near where the river meets the bay, so the historic town ends at a meeting of hill, river and sea.

དོན་དག་ཡོད་པའི་ས་ཁྲ།
A map of Kitsuki appeals to anyone who has visited the old slopes, and to people who like historic urban forms. Few towns show their feudal social structure this clearly in the street pattern.
You can set a title, subtitle and coordinates line, adding the date of a visit for example. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, which has a warm tone that suits the town's earthen walls.
