KU Leuven has no single enclosed campus in the usual sense. In Leuven itself, university buildings are scattered through the historic centre, a city of irregular medieval streets held inside a ring road that traces its former walls. The Dijle river winds north through the middle, and colleges, libraries and lecture halls sit beside houses, squares and shops throughout the town.
Founded in 1425, it is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Its University Library on Ladeuzeplein, rebuilt after the First World War, stands a short walk from the Grote Markt, and south of the city the Arenberg Castle campus in Heverlee houses science and engineering. The university also has a campus in Kortrijk, on the edge of that city.

Campuses beyond the centre
