Kumamoto grew up around its castle, completed in the early seventeenth century by Katō Kiyomasa on a low hill in the centre of the plain. The castle grounds still sit at the heart of the map, a large green block of walls and moats that the city's streets bend around. Nearby, the Shirakawa River curves through downtown on its way west to the Ariake Sea.
In April 2016 a series of strong earthquakes badly damaged the castle, and its restoration has become a long-term symbol of the city's recovery. Other landmarks include Suizenji Jojuen, a landscaped garden with a miniature Mount Fuji, and a tram network that still runs through the centre. Further east, the land climbs toward the vast caldera of Mount Aso.

Shirakawa River
The river curves through the city from the east, crossed by a series of bridges as it passes downtown and heads west toward the Ariake Sea.
Suizenji garden
East of the centre, Suizenji Jojuen sets a pond and rolling lawns inside a compact park, a small, distinctive shape among the surrounding blocks.
