La Spezia sits at the inner end of the Gulf of La Spezia, a deep bay on the eastern Ligurian coast. Its many nearby coves once drew writers, which earned it the name Gulf of Poets. On a map, the water forms a wide, sheltered basin. Portovenere lies at the tip of its western arm, and the coast of the Cinque Terre begins just beyond.
The city grew quickly after the Italian navy's arsenal opened here in 1869. Its large walled compound still takes up much of the western waterfront. Behind it, the centre follows a fairly regular nineteenth-century grid, the commercial port and container quays extend to the east, and the hills climb steeply above, with the Castle of San Giorgio overlooking the town.

The gulf
The wide, protected bay reaches out toward Portovenere and Lerici. Its outline gives the poster a strong, graceful shape.
