Lajas is a municipal town in Cienfuegos Province in central Cuba. It lies inland from the southern coast in a region long shaped by agriculture, sugar cane above all. The town's full name is Santa Isabel de las Lajas, and it is best known as the birthplace of Benny Moré. Born here in 1919, he became one of the defining voices of Cuban popular music.
