Lakewood fills much of the ground between Denver and the Rocky Mountain foothills. It is one of the largest cities in Colorado by population, yet it is laid out mostly as low suburban neighbourhoods. On a map its section-line roads form a loose grid, broken by curving subdivision streets, reservoirs and greenways, until the western edge meets the hogback ridge and the steeper land beyond.
The city lives up to its name, with many small lakes and ponds scattered through its neighbourhoods and the larger open space of Bear Creek Lake Park in the south-west. Green Mountain sits inside the city as a broad plateau with no roads across it. The Denver Federal Center occupies a large block of land, and the W Line light rail runs west toward Golden.

It holds the long line of West Colfax, the redeveloped Belmar district near the centre, the open patches of park and water, and the edge of the foothills closing the view. Green Mountain
A wide, flat-topped rise on the west side, left largely open as park land. Here the street pattern stops and trails take over, leaving a calm blank area in the composition.

The historic east–west highway runs straight through the northern part of the city toward Golden. It is a long commercial corridor that anchors the surrounding grid.
