Langzhong occupies a peninsula formed by a broad loop of the Jialing River in north-eastern Sichuan, with hills rising on the far banks. From above, the river curves around the town like a horseshoe, and the old quarter fills the inside of the bend with a close grid of lanes and courtyard houses, arranged in the careful manner classical Chinese town planning favoured.
It is often counted among the best-preserved ancient towns in China, and its setting is frequently cited as an example of fengshui principles, with mountains behind and water in front. The town is also closely associated with Zhang Fei, the Three Kingdoms general who governed here, and a temple in his honour stands in the old quarter.
A Langzhong map poster makes the relationship between river and town unusually clear. The water's curve frames everything, bridges step across to newer districts on the opposite banks, and the tight grid of the historic centre contrasts with the wider roads of modern growth. Bridges to the far banks
Several crossings link the peninsula with newer districts across the water, their straight lines cutting cleanly through the curve of the river.
