Lewes Map Poster & Print
Lewes is the county town of East Sussex, set on a spur of chalk where the River Ouse cuts a gap through the South Downs. From above, the town is organised around a long High Street that follows the ridge, with steep, narrow lanes known as twittens dropping down its sides towards the river and the flood plain below.
At the top of the town stand the remains of Lewes Castle, a Norman fortress with an unusual pair of mottes. In 1264 the Battle of Lewes was fought on the downs to the west, and the town is known today for its elaborate bonfire night celebrations each November.
A Lewes map poster shows the compact old town on its hill, the curve of the Ouse and the bare downland on either side. The contrast between the dense medieval street plan and the open chalk hills gives the map a strong, balanced composition.

The Ouse gap
The River Ouse passes through a gap in the South Downs just below the town, winding across a flat, open flood plain towards Newhaven and the sea.
Lewes Castle
The Norman castle, built with two mottes, stands at the highest point of the old town and still anchors the street pattern around it.

དོན་དག་ཡོད་པའི་ས་ཁྲ།
Lewes attracts people who love its independent character: the old streets, the bonfire societies, the downs on the doorstep. A map of the town hangs well in an old Sussex house or in a London flat that belongs to someone who misses it.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download a free watermarked preview first, then take the HD files or a printed, framed poster.
