Luanda lies on Angola's Atlantic coast. From above, its most recognisable feature is the bay, sheltered by the Ilha de Luanda, a long, narrow sand spit that runs parallel to the shore. The city centre curves around the bay, with the waterfront promenade known as the Marginal following the shoreline.
The Portuguese founded Luanda in 1576, and the Fortaleza de São Miguel still stands on a hill overlooking the bay. Below it lies the Baixa, the lower town, with a tighter pattern of streets. Above it, the Cidade Alta, the upper town, holds official buildings on higher ground.
