Māchhīwāra lies in Ludhiana district in Punjab, on the flat alluvial plain near the Sutlej river. From above the town has a dense older core of irregular lanes. Newer streets extend outward, and beyond them lies the regular, almost chessboard pattern of Punjab's farmland.
Roads connect the town to Samrala, Ludhiana and the river crossings to the north. The Sutlej itself, with its wide braided channels and floodplain, is one of the largest natural features in the area and gives the map a broad, flowing edge.
