Madrid, in the department of Cundinamarca, sits on the Sabana de Bogotá, the high Andean plateau around Colombia's capital, at roughly 2,550 metres above sea level. The town lies west of Bogotá on the road toward Facatativá. From above it forms a compact grid of blocks around a central plaza, set in almost perfectly level country.
The surrounding plain is one of the centres of Colombia's cut-flower industry, and large greenhouses in long, regular rows cover the land around Madrid. On a map they show up as rectangular parcels between rural roads, forming a patterned field around the town. Newer housing on the edges has pushed the grid outward, so the town has a clear core with rings of growth around it.
